Lori Lightfoot, new Mayor of Chicago

The Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice’s director, Dr. Jonathan Lightfoot, is heading home to Chicago to attend the inauguration of his cousin, Lori Lightfoot, as the new mayor of Chicago. She will succeed Rahm Emanuel, the former Chief of Staff for President Barack Obama. Lori Lightfoot will become the first Black woman to lead the third largest city in the United States.

Let’s congratulate the Lightfoot family and wish the new Mayor much success in what promises to be her most challenging job yet. Chicago needs good leadership!

They get married and it’s one of the few Greek myths that end happily.   But at another level, the story is about misogyny. The beginning of the story actually describes how Pygmalion was disgusted at the behavior of the women around him—they were prostitutes–and that’s what prompts him to create his statue. “My Traveling and Research into Black History Blog Summer ‘23” By Lisa Merrill

This summer my research took me across continents and back in time as I explored crucial locations and occasions of Black history and the diaspora in England, Scotland, and Ghana. It started in Bamber Bridge, Lancashire, England. There exactly 80 years ago during World War 2, when the US military was segregated, a troop of Black G. I.s were sent to this small town, Bamber Bridge. There they were welcomed by the locals, spent time in a 16th century pub, and all went well until a white US troop was stationed nearby. The resulting violent altercation, referred to by some as the Battle of Bamber Bridge, resulted in one Black G. I. being killed and eight others wounded. Mental health awareness is crucial in communities of color for several reasons. Promoting mental health awareness in communities of color is vital to address the unique challenges and barriers these communities face. It is essential for breaking down stigma, improving access to resources, and providing culturally competent care to ensure everyone has the support they need for their mental well-being. More specifically, how these benefits are necessary for students of color in college. As mentioned, many communities of color face significant stigma around mental health issues. There might be cultural norms or beliefs that stigmatize mental health discussions or seeking professional help. Awareness initiatives can help break down these barriers by providing accurate information and encouraging open conversations.
